Reframing Sleeplessness: It’s a Gift

Updated: Dec 9, 2018

I know. Ya right. But hear me out. Have you ever just longed for time to be quiet? To not have big or little voices clamoring for your attention? Maybe those hours of sleepless dark is the answer for you; a little window to embrace reflection.

This last year, I have had a terrible time sleeping through the night. I was beset by worry and fear. Anxious thoughts flooded my mind – usually I’d wake up with a nightmare and then lie there stewing in all that it brought to mind. I was a basket-case. All the years of my life before where I slept luxuriously and peacefully for 8-10 hours seemed to laugh at me! My body and mind had betrayed me!

I still am hopeful I will return to full nights of sleep sometime soon but if you’re like me, and wishing for more connected hours of sleep -no, 10 p.m.-2 a.m., awakeawakeawake and then, 4:30-5:45 a.m. blasted by the alarm…and then, let’s face it…falling back asleep until a hasty 7:30 a.m. to flounder out of bed – let me suggest to you the reframing of sleeplessness concept.

It is a gift.

Gifts are given, we don’t get to choose the gift we get.

Reflection time is a wonderful thing. And I will choose to use my sleeplessness as reflection

time, not time to worry.
